Often we have to resort to trying to spell it out but even that can be tricky, especially with regional alphabet variations (eg an English `e` is pronounced as a French 'i'!). That's what Phonetic Alphabets were invented to help with but it's hard to remember the correct words and making them up just leads to confusion!
